Military Munitions Response Program

Advanced Geophysical Classification Accreditation and Other Tools

DoD Advanced Geophysical Classification

DoD developed advanced geophysical classification to improve the efficiency of cleaning up munitions and to focus its resources on addressing the potential explosives safety risks at munitions response sites (MRSs).  To ensure quality data, the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health (ODASD(ESOH)) created the DoD Advanced Geophysical Classification Accreditation Program (DAGCAP) to accredit organizations that use advanced geophysical classification at MRSs.

DAGCAP

On April 11, 2016, the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Energy, Installations, and Environment) established the DAGCAP, requiring the DoD Components to begin using DAGCAP accredited organizations for advanced geophysical classification work beginning in calendar year 2017.

Accreditation through the DAGCAP is achieved through a two-step process: 1) assessing the organization’s quality system, and 2) successfully demonstrating capabilities performed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground DAGCAP test site.

The DAGCAP uses two third-party accreditation bodies to provide a unified program for organizations to demonstrate competency and document conformance to requirements.

The requirements are based on the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017, supplemented by the DoD Quality Systems Requirements for Organizations Performing Advanced Geophysical Classification.. The scope of accreditation is as follows: ISO 17025:2017, General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration laboratories, accreditation for Technology (Electro Magnetic Induction), Test (Subsurface Munitions), and Method (Advanced Geophysical Accreditation). The Environmental Data Quality Workgroup provides management and oversight of the DAGCAP.

DoD has selected and formally recognized two accreditation bodies to administer the DAGCAP:

American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) https://www.a2la.org/
ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) www.anab.org

Organizations planning to use the advanced geophysical classification at DoD MRSs should begin the application process by directly contacting either accreditation body.

The accrediting bodies will accept applications, conduct assessments, issue assessment reports, monitor implementation of corrective action responses, and issue accreditation certificates. Each accreditation body publishes a list of organizations that hold current accreditation for the advanced geophysical classification. You can visit their websites for this information.

Software Validated for Advanced Geophysical Classification

DoD must validate all software used for advanced geophysical classification accreditation in accordance with section 5.4.7.2 (a) of the Department of Defense Quality Systems Requirements for Advanced Geophysical Classification. The DAGCAP defines validated software as software that DoD either used successfully on a previous Environmental Security Research and Development Program (ESTCP) demonstration, or software that has produced equivalent or better results. The advanced geophysical classification software that DoD demonstrated successfully on ESTCP projects is considered previously validated and is not specifically called out below.  Consult with the appropriate individual software vendor on specific limitations associated with individual versions.

The validated advanced classification software programs are:

UXAnalyze V8.5, V9.0, V9.10, V9.2, V9.3.3, V9.4, V9.5, V9.6, V9.7, V9.8, V9.9, V9.10, V21.1, V21.2;

UXOLab V1.0, V1.1, V2.0, V3.1;

EMCLASS v2.1.6;

UX-Analyze Cloud V1.0 (MM2.2 cued only); and

BTField V12.24 (UltraTEM ISS only).
