Welcome to Integrated Solid Waste Management
Each year, DoD’s industrial, recreational, and commercial operations generate a variety of solid waste. DoD has adopted an integrated solid waste management (ISWM) approach to effectively manage solid waste generation, diversion, and disposal while maintaining compliance with Federal and DoD requirements. ISWM involves examining the solid waste stream and current markets opportunities to cost effectively minimize waste disposal through diversion. DoD has adopted the following environmental waste management hierarchy – source reduction, sustainable procurement, reuse, donation, recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy before incineration or landfilling. More details are in DoD Instruction 4715.23, “Integrated Recycling and Solid Waste Management,” dated October 24, 2016.
