Sustainable Procurement Resources
FedMall is an automated procurement system providing a simple method to purchase sustainable products. The Defense Logistics Agency manages FedMall and procures common usage items for all military departments and DoD agencies.
CPG Items are listed through the EPA and currently include 61 items which can be purchased with recycled content, such as paper and paper products, construction products, re-refined oil, etc. The Agency must require that 100% of purchases meet or exceed EPA’s recycled content recommendations. A written justification/waiver is required for non-compliance.
Recovered Material Advisory Notices (RMANs) are issued by EPA to provide purchasing guidance and recommend recovered and postconsumer material content levels for designated items based on current information on commercially available recycled-content products. RMAN recommendations are guidance and therefore are not codified in the CFR.
The Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) is a system to help purchasers evaluate, compare, and select electronic products based on their impact. EPEAT provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their products.
FEMP is a DOE program that works builds the capacity of the Federal agency workforce to achieve efficient, secure, and resilient energy use in facilities and fleets. FEMP resources and assistance help Federal agencies increase efficiency in their mission-critical facilities. FEMP also maintains acquisition guidance for the covered product categories specified under various efficiency programs.
ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the EPA and the DOE that provides simple, credible, and unbiased information and elevates energy efficient products and practices.
The USDA BioPreferred program is a resource for producers of biobased products and Federal agencies required to purchase them. The program includes information on submitting products for designation, instructions on meeting requirements to purchase biobased materials, and other relevant topics.
The EPA SNAP evaluates substitutes for ozone-depleting substances and hydrofluorocarbons. This program identifies and lists acceptable alternative products by industrial sector, and includes information on product submission and the program review process.
WaterSense is a voluntary partnership program sponsored by the EPA that provides a label for approved water-efficient products and also provides water-efficient resources for consumers. The WaterSense label is awarded to products, buildings, and programs that meet EPA’s criteria for water efficiency and performance.
EPA’s Safer Choice program has evaluated and recommends over 2,000 products to residential consumers under the SaferChoice label that meet safety criteria for all chemical ingredients. In additional to chemical safety, products must meet performance and packaging specifications to earn a SaferChoice label. The program also includes alternate labels for products used in businesses, office buildings, sports venues, and schools.
