Army Base Realignment and Closure

Fort Greely

⚠️ Fort Greely was designated under BRAC 1995; however, the BRAC disposition was subsequently reversed, and the installation was retained for continued military use.

BRAC 1995 Action

BRAC Summary: Realign Fort Greely by relocating the Cold Region Test Activity (CRTA) and Northern Warfare Training Center (NWTC) to Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Property Description: Fort Greely is located about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska adjacent to the town of Delta Junction and included 640,000 acres at the time of the 1995 BRAC Commission recommendation.

Subsequent Reversal of BRAC 1995 Action

Fort Greely was designated for closure/realignment in the 1995 BRAC Commission Report to the President.

Subsequent federal action reversed the BRAC disposition. In 2001, Public Law 107‑20 was enacted, giving the Secretary of Defense authority to retain all or a portion of Fort Greely to meet missile defense requirements. On 24 October 2001, DASA‑IH approved the withdrawal of the Fort Greely surplus property determination, effective 8 November 2001. Consistent with that authority, the Department of the Army removed the installation from the BRAC disposal process.

The 2005 BRAC Commission Report to the President, Volume 1 explicitly acknowledges that the 2001 action reversed the 1995 BRAC decision, thereby permitting continued military use of Fort Greely.
